Ruqing Zhang (张儒清)

I am currently an Associate Professor at Institute of Computing Technology (ICT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). I received my Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, under the supervision of Academician Guojie Li and Prof. Jiafeng Guo, in 2019. Prior to that, I received my B.S. degree from Department of Computer Science, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 2014. From Nov. 2022 to Nov. 2023, I was a visiting researcher at the IRLab, University of Amsterdam, where I worked with Prof. Maarten de Rijke.

My research focuses on Generative Information Retrieval, aiming to move beyond traditional document retrieval toward systems that can understand, generate, and continuously refine knowledge. I study key topics including complex query understanding, generative retrieval, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic search, adversarial robustness, model distillation, LLM agents and LLM reasoning.

My current interests center on DeepResearch agents, i.e., autonomous systems for long-horizon information access and knowledge synthesis. I am particularly interested in three challenges: (1) Self-evolving intelligence: enabling agents to continuously learn, adapt, and accumulate reusable knowledge; (2) Computational efficiency: improving token economy and computational efficiency for scalable deployment; and (3) Safety: enhancing robustness, reliability, and trustworthiness in real-world applications.

I have authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals and conferences, including ACM TOIS, SIGIR, WWW, KDD, NeurIPS, CIKM, WSDM, ACL, EMNLP etc. My research is supported by the National Key Research and Development Program of China, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the CAS Strategic Priority Research Program, and research funding from industry partners including Baidu,Tencent, ByteDance, Alibaba, etc.

I am always excited to work with talented and self-motivated interns interested in machine learning, information retrieval, natural language processing, and LLMs. Master’s positions are available each year, and motivated students are encouraged to reach out.
