Ruqing Zhang (张儒清)

I am currently an Associate Professor at Institute of Computing Technology (ICT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). I received my Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, under the supervision of Academician Guojie Li and Prof. Jiafeng Guo, in 2019. Prior to that, I received my B.S. degree from Department of Computer Science, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 2014. From Nov. 2022 to Nov. 2023, I was a visiting researcher at the IRLab, University of Amsterdam, where I worked with Prof. Maarten de Rijke.

My research focuses on Generative Information Retrieval, with the goal of moving beyond traditional document retrieval toward intelligent systems that can understand, reason over, generate, and continuously refine knowledge. My research spans generative retrieval, search agents, multimodal search, trustworthy LLM reasoning, and LLM safety evaluation. More recently, I have been working on Autonomous Scientific Research Agents, aiming to enable large language models and AI agents to participate in and accelerate the scientific discovery process. In this direction, I study three fundamental challenges: self-evolving scientific intelligence, which enables agents to continuously learn and accumulate reusable knowledge; scalable agentic research, which enables efficient and long-horizon scientific reasoning and execution; and trustworthy scientific agents, which ensures reliable, interpretable, and safe AI-assisted scientific discovery.

I have authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals and conferences, including ACM TOIS, SIGIR, WWW, KDD, NeurIPS, CIKM, WSDM, ACL, EMNLP etc. My research is supported by the National Key Research and Development Program of China, National Natural Science Foundation of China, the CAS Strategic Priority Research Program, and research funding from industry partners including Baidu, Tencent, ByteDance, Alibaba, etc.
